Distinguished and Famous people from Elsternwick

🌟 Frederick Sargood

Frederick Sargood established Rippon Lea at Elsternwick in 1868, creating a substantial family home and garden. The estate became an ambitious example of nineteenth-century domestic life, with its landscaped grounds developed in the Picturesque style. Now cared for by the National Trust, it preserves a direct connection with the family who commissioned it. Sargood’s local legacy can still be walked through: a house, garden and working estate whose scale reveals the resources and aspirations of a prosperous Victorian household.

📚 Alister Kershaw

Alister Kershaw was born at Elsternwick in 1921 and became a poet, broadcaster and chronicler of literary life. In Melbourne he mixed with artists and writers, contributing poems and reviews while developing a taste for satire. With Adrian Lawlor he invented the fictional poet Mort Brandish, a literary hoax that preceded the Ern Malley affair. Much of his later life was spent in France, including years as the ABC’s Paris correspondent. Elsternwick is his birthplace, before the bohemian gatherings and overseas broadcasts. A talent for words was accompanied by an evident reluctance to leave literary reputations entirely undisturbed.

📖 Enid Moodie Heddle

Enid Moodie Heddle was born at Elsternwick in 1904 and became an influential author, editor and educational publisher. A childhood voyage aboard her father’s ship offered an early supply of stories. As a teacher she noticed how little Australian literature children encountered, and later worked to make it more accessible through school readers and anthologies. Her publishing work included the Boomerang series, designed to encourage wider reading and home libraries. The Elsternwick link is her birthplace; the contribution that followed reached classrooms across Australia, bringing local writing into the books through which children discovered the world.

🧪 Gerald and Rae Oppenheim

Gerald and Rae Oppenheim began the business that became Ego Pharmaceuticals at their Elsternwick home after returning from overseas in 1952. Gerald brought chemistry training, while Rae’s nursing experience and ability to deal with people helped build relationships with customers. Initially they kept other jobs: he taught science and geography, and she worked as a visiting nurse. Small-batch manufacturing, labelling and deliveries gradually grew into a substantial enterprise. Elsternwick was the practical starting point, before later expansion to larger premises elsewhere. Their story includes the less glamorous ingredients of business growth: technical work, personal contacts and a great many small tasks.

✈️ Lores Bonney

Before long-distance flying made her name, Lores Bonney attended Cromarty Girls’ School at Elsternwick. Born in South Africa, she had moved with her family to Melbourne in 1903. Further musical study in Germany produced an accomplished pianist, although stage fright ended her ambition to perform professionally. Aviation later offered a very different arena for her independence. She flew around Australia and made major solo journeys to England and South Africa. The Elsternwick connection belongs to her schooling, an early chapter before the airfields, engine repairs and distant landing places.
